The challenge

Legacy codebase and need for modernization: The client possessed an existing mobile application codebase, acquired for a different purpose, which had similar core functionality but a different user interface and branding. This legacy codebase presented challenges in terms of maintainability, scalability, and alignment with the client's brand identity and evolving needs. The core challenge was to leverage the existing functionality while completely refreshing the user experience and ensuring a modern, robust application.

Rapid beta launch for user feedback: A critical objective was to quickly launch a beta version of the application with core donation functionality. The primary challenge here was to efficiently adapt the existing codebase, integrate the client's branding, streamline the donation process for their specific corporate accounts, and deploy a functional beta version to gather crucial early user feedback on usability, tone of voice, and key user flows. Time-to-market for this beta was essential for informing subsequent development.

Developing an MVP with investment support and compliance: The ultimate goal was to launch a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with the significant addition of investment capabilities for their users. This presented a multifaceted challenge. It required not only designing and developing this new functionality but also seamlessly integrating user feedback gathered during the beta phase. Furthermore, ensuring full compliance with all relevant regulations for financial transactions within the application was a paramount and intricate technical and legal hurdle.

Creating a user-centric UI/UX design: A key challenge within the MVP development was crafting a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design that resonated with the target audience, reflected the desired brand tone of voice, and effectively supported the core functionality, including the new investment features. This required a deep understanding of the target user base and careful consideration of the user journey to create an intuitive and engaging application.

The solution

The project involved strategically adapting the existing code base to fulfill the specific requirements. This included a comprehensive rebranding effort to visually integrate the application with the new identity throughout the user interface. The primary goal of this initial stage was the rapid delivery of a working beta version.

Technical debt was also paid off and superfluous features were removed from the acquired codebase, allowing the code to scale with a solid baseline.

The design process was guided by a deep understanding of the target audience, the desired tone of voice, and the expanded functional scope, particularly the new investment features. The result was an application consistently praised by users for its clarity, simplicity, and visual appeal.

To support Climatize’s core offering, we developed and integrated the investment functionality with a strong focus on usability and security. Throughout this process, we ensured full compliance with financial regulations, supported by rigorous QA practices that helped validate both technical and regulatory requirements.
